What The Sonogram Will Show You At Your 20 Week Pregnancy Appointment

Posted on: 20 August 2015

Going in for your sonogram when you are 20 weeks pregnant is quite exciting because you will likely only have had one or two before this one, and they won't have been nearly as detailed. By 20 weeks your baby is developed enough that the sonographer will be able to see them quite well, and can better show you what they look like. They will also be able to look for a variety of other things as well. This article will discuss what exactly that sonogram will show you and your sonographer at your 20 week pregnancy appointment.

How Your Baby Is Developing

Your sonographer will specifically be able to look for how your baby is developing. They will check their size to make sure that they are on track growth wise. They will do this by measuring their head, their stomach, and their femur. If all 3 of these match up in terms of size, then they are proportional, even if they are measuring a bit small or big, which is the most important thing. The sonographer will also check to make sure that your baby has all 10 fingers and toes, and will check their heart to make sure that is has four chambers and is pumping blood in and out as it should. Your baby's kidneys will also be checked to make sure that they do not contain any fluid in them because this may be a sign that they aren't developing properly.

What Gender Your Baby Is

If you would like to know whether or not your baby is a boy or a girl, now is the time that you can find out. Your baby is developed enough that determining their gender is quite easy, just as long as they are in a position where you can see that area of their body. The sonographer will look over your baby's pelvic area, and will be able to show you whether or not you are going to be expecting a bouncing baby boy or girl.

How Much Amniotic Fluid There Is

It is important that your amniotic fluid levels do not drop too low because this could be dangerous for your baby. The amniotic fluid provides protection for your baby from within the womb, and allows him or her to move around safely and comfortably.  When you receive your 20 week sonogram, the sonographer will check your levels to make sure that they are where they need to be. If they do find that they are excessively low, you will need to see your OBGYN soon, to see what type of treatment plan they will suggest for you.
